At the beginning of 1991 local Historian Jack Uttley along with several other local people decided to convene a meeting in Mytholmroyd with the intention of forming a Group or Society whose aim would be to uncover, record and present the History of our Village. Also, to invite speakers whose topics would be of Historical Interest.
The Inaugural Meeting took place on Friday 11th January 1991 in the Scout Road Methodist Sunday School when approximately 50 people attended.
It was a very informal meeting but with so much interest shown it was decided to give the venture a six month’s trial.
The name “Mytholmroyd Historical Society” was agreed upon and the following Officers were voted in:
Founder President: Mr. Peter Hoyle
Founder Vice-President: Mr. Roy Daniels
Founder Secretary: Miss Joyce Greenwood
Founder Treasurer: Mrs Molly Sunderland
Founder Programme Secretary: Mr. Jack Uttley
It was agreed at this meeting that a charge of 50 pence per attendee would be made for the trial meetings to cover the cost of room hire, postage etc.
The first “General Meeting” took place on January 18th 1991 and the late Jack Uttley showed slides of local interest.
Since 1991 we have had approximately 150 Speakers, 3 Members meetings where our own members have spoken and 3 joint meetings with the Hebden Bridge History Group.
In the beginning members enjoyed various rambles to different local places of interest and in 1994 a coach outing was arranged to go to Barley Hall in York. Since that time Annual Visits have been arranged and well supported to many Historical places.
